Benefits of Medical Tourism

The concept of medical tourism actually traces back to ancient Greece, where pilgrims and patients from all over the Mediterranean came to the sanctuary of healing god, Asklepios, at Epidaurus. There are a lot of discussion going around the globe to see if there are benefits of medical tourism. The various reasons are the cost issues, ease and affordability of international travel, long frustrating queues in many nations and above all improving technology standards of health care in many countries of the world. Medical tourism is actively promoted in a lot of countries, like India, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, Belgium, Serbia etc. Surprisingly it is available in most of the hospitals of these destination countries. As any insurance company is not liable to bear their medical expenses, they find it better to have treatment in abroad with less expediture.

Not only are the doctors in popular medical tourism countries highly educated and experienced but also the infrastructure and medical facilities available there are at par, if not better than most developed countries. The hospitals are equipped with the latest electronic and medical diagnostic equipment. Many procedures are less expensive abroad. In particular, India excels in open-heart surgery, pediatric heart surgery, bone marrow transplants and cancer therapy. Medical tourism is popular and generally accepted because it provides the patients with medical assistance accompanied by five-star treatment and exclusive vacations. And while vacation might not be the goal here, people certainly want to recuperate from any treatment while holidaying in their preferred places. This is why so many people today are attracted to this unique concept.

Medical tourism has experienced a high growth rate in the recent past and one of the most important factors contributing to this is the standardization of medical procedures, practices and equipments. Also, while most advanced countries would require the patients to wait for long periods before undergoing any critical treatment or major operation, in most of these medical tourism destinations, the waiting time is virtually nil. The leisure, fun and relaxation together with health care attached to it have made medical tourism a common form of vacation.
